S.M.A.R.T Goals

Now setting S.M.A.R.T goals is not a new concept to anyone. But the one question that I am often asked is why?

“Why set S.M.A.R.T goals, I’m doing fine without them.”

Is usually what I hear from clients.

My response to them is usually along the lines of, “If you were doing so well, then what is the purpose of you coming to see me? What is it that is missing from your life that guided you to me?”

The main response was ‘a lack passion, purpose, or direction in life.’

This is something that goal setting can assist with.

S.M.A.R.T goals is just one method that could help you to gain that sense of direction and fulfilment you’ve been looking for.

What are S.M.A.R.T Goals

SMART goals are a system you can use to assist you in creating guidelines to help you focus on achieving your goals, in a realistic and achievable way.

Goal setting

How does it work

Let’s break down the acronym shall we:

make sure your goal has as much detail as you are able to give. Include who, what, where, when, why, which and how. You can even describe how it would feel once you have achieved that goal.

This is where you break it down into numbers through tracking your progress. Ask yourself: how long, how much, how many e.c.t

Is your goal attainable, realistic, are they not too far out of your reach, or too easily obtained, do you have the necessary skills to achieve them, list them and if not, can you acquire them? Take your time to think this through and be honest with yourself.

The questions here are more to do with the bigger picture of what you want for yourself. Is your goal worthwhile, are you doing it for you or to make other people happy, does it go hand in hand with your other goals in life or does it take away from them, how would achieving this particular goal help you?

Time bound

You guessed it, put an achievable deadline on it, set up milestones or checkpoint along the way. Be careful not to put too much pressure on yourself with too tight a deadline.

There are easy steps you can take to create your S.M.A.R.T goals.

Write it down

brain dump it onto a piece of paper in detail, all the while asking yourself why it is that you wish to set this goal. Think about all the different aspects needed to achieve your goal, does it require other people, different locations, extra education?

Break it down step by step.

This is necessary for, at least, your larger goals, breaking it down into bite sized pieces. This will help, not only with, overwhelming feelings of ‘it’s all too much’, but it will make your goals more digestible. Don’t forget to prioritise, what needs to be done now and what can you do later?

Action steps

This is the fun bit.

How are you going to put your plan into action? You can create a vision board to help you stay motivated or write in a bullet journal to help you keep track, or maybe by using a planner or perhaps a digital planner with reminders and alarms.

Whatever system you put into place, don’t forget to hold yourself accountable, if that is not something your good at, then seek out an accountability buddy to help you stay on track. It needs to be someone who supports your vision.

One last thing

Reward yourself for your hard work. You deserve it for all your hard work.
